New insights into global diabetes management at EASD 2017
The DISCOVER team presented exciting baseline data at the 53rd Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), Lisbon, Portugal,11–15 September.
As well as three encore presentations on glycaemic control (poster 302 led by Professor Linong Ji), treatment patterns (poster 662 led by Professor Antonio Nicolucci) and the prevalence of complications (poster 1126 led by Professor Marina V Shestakova), the DISCOVER team presented two new analyses of the DISCOVER baseline data. The first poster reported the proportions of patients who attained glycated haemoglobin, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and blood pressure targets recommended by clinical guidelines, and was presented by Professor Marília B Gomes (poster 301). The second poster, presented by Professor Kamlesh Khunti, reported the proportions of patients who discontinued metformin when initiating their second-line glucose-lowering therapy, and the factors associated with metformin discontinuation (poster 906). All posters prompted questions from the audience, confirming the genuine interest of the scientific community in the DISCOVER results. To view the posters, please visit the EASD website (please use the poster numbers in the search field).
Lisbon was also the venue for a DISCOVER Scientific Committee meeting to discuss the current status of the study and to plan future publications. Scientific Committee members commended the investigators’ hard work and were very pleased by the amount of data collected, both at baseline and after 1 year of follow-up. Maintaining the momentum of data collection is now key to ensure that the DISCOVER study meets its objectives at the end of the 3-year follow-up period.
